How much does it cost to buy a car in US?

This is totally dependent on your purchase choices, compliance work and transport concerns. Hachey Imports charge $400.00 + tax to broker the import, including documentation to both sides of the border, customs and RIV proceedures and assistance with registration.

Do I have to pay duty?

If your vehicle is made outside of North America duty of 6.1% will apply to the purchase price. Look at the VIN ( Vehicle Indentification Number ) and in most cases if it starts with a number you are exempt from Duty.

Do I have to pay any taxes if I buy a car in the US?

You will pay the GST (5%) at the border on the vehicle purchase price after conversion to Canadian dollars. The PST (if applicable in your province ) is paid at the time of registration.

What is an Excise Tax?

This is a fee of $100.00 that you pay if your vehicle is equipped with Air Conditioning and is payable to Canadian Customs at the border.

Who is RIV, and why do they want my money?

Registrar of Imported Vehicles is the Federally contracted agency responsible for keeping track of imported vehicles. They insure compliance with Canadian vehicle safety standards, assist with the importation process and with registration of your new vehicle. The fee of $195.00 + tax is payable prior to receiving Form 2, which is needed to have your final inspection done to prove modifications have been completed.

Do I also pay for the Federal inspection at Canadian Tire?

No. This is included in your RIV fee.

Will I also pay US taxes?

No. No matter what state we purchase from, there will not be any taxes applied.

If I buy a car in the Us can I buy from anyone, or only from a dealership?

There are pros and cons for used purchase from private sellers, but the choice is yours.

What about a warranty…is it provided?

In the ever-changing world of imports, the warranty situation is constantly being updated. For now, many of the manufacturers will provide warranty with some qualifications in place. This will be explained and outlined as we work through the process together.

Can I choose to drive my new car home?

Yes. How the vehicle gets to your driveway is your decision.

What do I do after I have the car home?

Registration, compliance modifications and vehicle inspections will all be explained by us to make the process clear and worry free.

Can I buy a warranty from anyone to protect my vehicle?

There are a number of third-party warranty providers and we will advise and recommend based on your needs.

How long will all of this take?

This is dependent on a number of factors including manufacturer requirements, availability of your vehicle and transport distance. Generally we can have your car home and legally registered in less than three weeks, at tremendous savings to you.

Are there any “hidden” costs?

The quote we provide outlines all fees, taxes and costs. There will be nothing hidden and the price you pay will be easily determined.

How much will shipping cost me?

The great variable. Depending on size of the vehicle, distance travelled and value of the car the range of options is too large to describe here. The choice is always yours, but count on us to explain your options and advise based on experience. The least expensive is not always the best choice and considering liability, reliability and reputation are of importance.
